Cafes and Diners

The cafes, drive-in restaurants and burger joints that came into existence along Route 66 were indicative of an era. The ones that survived the effects of time are those that best represented the times in which they were opened and prospered. They reflect the new found sense of optimism of the latter 1930s and the jubilation of the 1950s after leaving behind the trauma of a World War. The prosperity of the 1950s was reflected in the flowing architectural lines of the buildings and the flowing care-free signage. Americans were out to enjoy themselves and their surroundings mirrored their sense of the good times.
